Race Update: LOCATION CHANGE!!! The Shasta Ascension will be held at the Bunny Flat Trailhead next Saturday, January 20th. Due to a limited snow pack, we will not be able to hold the race at the Mt Shasta Ski Park this weekend. An active weather pattern is forecasted for the week with a small break on Saturday which is looking promising for the race. Check back here for a detailed route description of the Bunny Flat Course.

Wax your sticks, dust off your costumes and we will see YOU there!

Climb up the mountain then ski back down. Splitboards, Randonee, Telemark welcome. Costumes encouraged!! Great prizes will be given for best costumes, fastest time in each age category and overall. Events to support the Mt Shasta Avalanche Center will be going on all day long, with free backcountry ski demos, hosted by the Fifth Season; free intro to backcountry ski clinic by Shasta Mountain Guides; and the 16th Anniversary Snow Ball with live music and lots of prizes in the evening.

Course :

The race follows a traditional randonee (ski mountaineering) format with “... a timed event that follows an established trail through challenging winter alpine terrain while passing through a series of checkpoints.  Racers climb and descend under their own power using backcountry skiing equipment and techniques” (USSMA).

Racers will begin at Bunny Flat Trailhead. The Start/Finish Arena will be positioned just above the green gate at the upper end of the Bunny Flat Parking Lot. From there, the course will follow the snow covered Everitt Memorial Highway for approximately one mile, then will depart to the north, heading up into the Old Ski Bowl. If conditions and visibility permit, the course will ascend to approximately 9,000 feet in the Old Ski Bowl to the top checkpoint, where racers will transition to skiing and descend. The exact route will be determined by weather and snow conditions. See the map below for the proposed route.

Racers will stay in control at all times.  Be aware that the general public will be on the runs as the racers descend. The course route is dependent on weather and snow conditions.
