NW winds averaging 15-25mph and gusting 40mph were observed above treeline in the Old Ski Bowl today. Periods of rain and freezing rain during the storms ending on Saturday morning have capped the snow surface up to 8,000ft with a stout 2cm rain crust. Below treeline, not much snow is available for transport. Above treeline where the snow surface stayed cold and dry is a different story. Plumes of snow billowing off ridge tops and across slopes were observed all throughout the day on the south side of Mount Shasta. With the obvious transport of snow on the mountain, snowpack loading continues for now. In addition, scoured, firm, and icy snow surfaces were observed and the evidence of wind effect was widespread throughout the terrain.
