Snowpack Observations

Details

Another wet and wild day on Grey Butte.

Snow level verifying at 6000', wet and sticky below 6800', fast and smooth above. Moderate winds and low visibility near treeline.

Winds predominantly SW, moderate up to 30 mph. Snow accumulation since yesterday ranged from scoured to 3 in on windward slopes and up to 9 inches on leeward slopes. Definite evidence of snow transport (see video) with loading on NW, N, and NE slopes.

No instablities were observed within the new storm snow or on aspects not affected by wind loading, though stability tests yielded a CT11 and ECTP13 resistant planar failure just below the new/old storm interface in a fist hardness layer, about 31 cm down on a NE windloaded aspect at 7900' (see pic). New snow grains were fragmented and wind broken (DFbk) from .1-.5 mm in size.
