Snowpack Observations

Details

Observations atop Gray Butte:

  • Height of snow (HS): 51 in (135 cm).
  • Height of new snow since December 6th: 31 in (80 cm).
  • New snow is right side up, ranging from fist (F) to a pencil (P) hard 4 inch (10 cm) rain crust.
  • Layers well bonded, column tests yielded no results on NE aspect @ 8000 ft: CTN, ECTX, STN.
  • Minimal wind effect. No signs of a wind slab problem.
  • No obvious signs of instability.
  • Snow surfaces becoming moist and heavy near treeline.
  • Hazards still lurk beneath snow above treeline.
