A test pit dug today on a north aspect at 8000ft in the Deadfall Lakes area of Mount Eddy revealed good snowpack structure, high strength and very good overall snowpack stability. Height of snow at this location was 275cm and the height of the recent storm snow was 70cm. Height of snow above 6000ft throughout the area ranged from 1.5-3m. The snowpack has a right side up configuration, and is very well consolidated below the top 30cm of surface snow. Boot penetration was 30cm. No significant layers of concern stood out from stability testing today. Small column tests resulted in resistant planar fractures and irregular breaks on 2 density breaks within the 70cm of recent settled storm snow. Neither of the 2 density break layers propagated fractures in large column tests. All information gathered on several different days since 01/23, and throughout several areas within the forecast area, illustrates a very low likelihood of an avalanche occurring near and below treeline with the current conditions.
