1” of new snow fell between 11:30am and 4pm today. The sky was fully covered throughout the majority of the day. Breaks in the clouds and sporadic precipitation occurred. Snow coverage was good on Park’s Creek Road above 5,600ft.
Moderate to Strong northwest winds blew steadily throughout the day, and wind scouring and wind transported snow were noticeable near and above treeline.
The 12/23 layer, buried about 1ft/30cm down from the snow surface, produced unstable results in compression tests, extended columns tests, and propagation saw tests conducted today. This layer has presented as weak snow sitting below a crust on several shady, cold slopes (NW,N,NE,E). At a test pit location in the Eddy Range today at 7800ft on north facing slope, the 12/23 layer presented as rounding facets and the crust was absent. As weight is added to the snowpack with the incoming storms this week, this layer may loose strength and be the culprit for a persistent slab avalanche problem in the advisory area.
