Snowpack Observations

Details

An adventure to Shastarama today. Despite visual clues of windy conditions, we were surprised by how low the wind speeds were on our way up to Shastarama. A lot of moving snow along ridges, especially Casaval, but was overall light with a few moderate gusts where we were. Flat light made for less than ideal pictures.

Notes:

  • Blowing snow visible on ridges
  • Dry, chalky wind textured, hard snow (4F-1F) above 9,000 feet
  • Variable, mostly supportable, textured snow with pockets of smooth, dry powder 7,000 to 9,000 feet
  • Semi-supportable melt-freeze crust below 7,000 feet
