Weather Observations
Details
Today Bunny Flat to 7600' was a mix of rain, light snow and sleet. Above up to treeline was wet snow and about 1/8 mile visibility.
Bunny Flat, at 11 a.m., there was about 5 cm (2 in) of new snow over the last 18 hours. At just above treeline, there was 18 cm (7 in) of new snow).
Snow conditions were heavy and wet throughout.
The instabilities observed on west aspects of Green Butte Ridge yesterday afternoon at 36 cm (14 in) have diminished. The weakness that was observed yesterday is now at 54 cm with 18 cm of new snow, but has turned into a 1F density. No CT failures were observed on westerly aspects just above treeline.
Snow pit tests on the easterly facing aspects of lower Sun Bowl yielded CT14 and ECTP12 results. Failures occured 38.5 cm (15 in) below the snowpack surface at a 1F hardness layer on top of P+ hardness wind slab. Subsequent CT and ECT tests yielded no failures. However, shovel shear tests with easy force caused a wind slab to release 122 cm below the snowpack surface. Windslab was 54 cm in thickness
